Wiltshire Council shares advice on how you can help rough sleepers this winter

What do you do when you see someone sleeping rough?

How can you really help someone when you're not sure the best way to do it?

Wiltshire Council is offering advice to people on what they can do to support anyone they see sleeping rough on the streets. If people see someone on the streets they can provide details to StreetLink which connects rough sleepers with local services that can support them. Streetlink will provide the council with details, so officers can talk to the rough sleeper, help them find a warm place to stay and offer ongoing support.

Wiltshire Council will be sharing messages and information on their Facebook and Instagram accounts throughout November and December to raise awareness of rough sleeping and what people can do to help.

The council works with rough sleepers throughout the year to help them find a place to stay and support to get back on track. The work is carried out alongside charities, which offer practical support as well as longer-term aid.

Since November last year, the council supported 420 rough sleepers via early morning outreach - this is where officers go out in pairs to engage with rough sleepers, take hot coffees and see what support can be provided. Officers then arrange a follow-up appointment to explore support and accommodation options.

Currently more than 18 people are being helped into short-term accommodation in Wiltshire. The council's rough sleeper tenancy officers also continue to support more than 68 rough sleepers into long-term accommodation.

Cllr Adrian Foster, Cabinet Member for Housing said: “Seeing someone sleeping rough is heartbreaking, and while giving money might feel like the easiest way to help, the most effective action is to report through Streetlink. This allows us to respond quickly and provide the right support. Donations to local homeless charities also make a real difference, funding practical help and advice. Many rough sleepers have experienced deep trauma, so building trust takes time. Our outreach team works patiently and compassionately to help each individual find a warm, safe place to stay.”
