Think You’re Resilient? Think Again

Business Continuity Week – Why it matters for every small business

It’s easy to think resilience is something that only affects big organisations or emergency services. But the reality is, small businesses are often the most vulnerable when something goes wrong, whether that’s a power cut, flooding, cyber issue, or staff shortage. Business Continuity Week (18th - 22nd May 2026) is a good reminder to pause and ask a simple question:

Could your business keep going if something unexpected happened tomorrow?

Why business continuity matters?

Disruptions don’t have to be dramatic to cause real problems. A short power outage, supplier delay, or loss of internet access can quickly stop day-to-day operations. For small businesses, even a brief interruption can mean lost income, missed opportunities, or unhappy customers.

Planning ahead helps you stay in control. It’s not about predicting everything, it’s about being ready enough to respond, recover quickly, and keep things moving where possible.

“We’ll deal with it if it happens”… or will you?

Many businesses rely on informal plans or just hope things won’t go wrong. But when something does happen, having a clear plan makes all the difference. Knowing who does what, how to contact customers, or how to keep delivering your service can save time, stress, and money.

Simple steps to get started

Business continuity doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. Here are a few practical things any small business can do:

Know your risks
Think about what could realistically disrupt your business, power loss, flooding, IT failure, or staff absence.

Identify your priorities
What are the most important parts of your business that need to keep running? Focus your efforts there first.

Have a basic plan
Write down simple steps for what you would do if something goes wrong. Include key contacts, suppliers, and responsibilities.

Back up important information
Make sure key files, customer details, and financial records are securely backed up and accessible if needed.

Think about alternatives
Could you work from another location? Use a different supplier? Communicate with customers in another way?

Talk to your team
Make sure everyone knows the plan and feels confident in what to do.

Small actions, big difference

You don’t need a perfect plan, just a practical one. Taking a bit of time now can make your business far more resilient when it really counts.
