Still time to join the Great British Spring Clean for 2026

With this year’s Great British Spring Clean just around the corner, there’s still plenty of time for people to join forces with their local community and get involved.

Organised by Keep Britain Tidy, the Great British Spring Clean is the UK’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign and runs from 13 to 29 March 2026. It encourages people to pick up litter and make a positive difference in their local area.

Wiltshire Council can support local groups to run their own litter‑picking events, with equipment available to loan to town and parish councils, schools, and community organisations across the county. Last year, as part of the council’s Don’t Mess with Wiltshire campaign, more than 150 community litter picks took place, collecting over 9,800kg of litter.

Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways and Street Scene, said: “There’s still time to sign up and be part of the Great British Spring Clean. Every bag of litter collected helps protect our wildlife, strengthens community spirit, and keeps Wiltshire looking its best.

“I want to say a huge thank you to the volunteers, schools and community groups who have already signed up or who already go above and beyond to care for their local areas - your efforts make a real difference every day.

“If you can spare a little time this March, becoming a #LitterHero is a simple way to help keep Wiltshire clean and green.”

Paul Ashman, Community Engagement Manager at idverde, said, "The Great British Spring Clean (13th-29th March), the UK's biggest community clean-up, is definitely not one to miss. By joining in, you'll help protect the environment, support local wildlife, and make your neighbourhood look great. It's a fun way to meet others, get outdoors, boost your mood, and do your bit to tackle litter and pollution."

Schools can also join the Great Big School Clean, with pupils helping to tidy their local area. Last year, more than 50 schools across Wiltshire took part, receiving children’s litter pickers, hi‑vis vests and gloves.

Groups and schools can sign up for the Great British Spring Clean, request equipment, or arrange waste collection by contacting the idverde Community Engagement Manager at: wiltshirehelpdesk@idverde.co.uk.

Where possible, volunteers should dispose of collected litter using household black bins or public bins with enough capacity. For larger events expected to gather 10 or more bags, Wiltshire Council can arrange a dedicated collection. People can find out more about the Great British Spring Clean at www.keepbritaintidy.org
This year, schools are encouraged to link their Spring Clean activity with the new Wiltshire Biodiversity Champions programme. School sign‑up for this programme is now live, and a growing number of schools have already registered. Combining biodiversity actions with litter‑picking will help schools make an even bigger positive impact on Wiltshire’s natural environment.
