Terrorist Content Online
This article contains information & advice regarding risks that do not appear on the Risk Register.
What should you do if you spot terrorist or violent extremism online?
The internet has revolutionised the way we live our lives and it’s hard to imagine a day without it. Unfortunately, alongside all the good things the internet brings us, it also has some downsides such as being a home to graphic or violent extremist content. Should you come across any of this content it’s important you report it here: Tell us about possible terrorist activity | Metropolitan Police
It’s vitally important that this type of content is reported to ensure as few people view it as possible. The earlier this can be reported and removed the less likely it is that anyone else will stumble upon it.
Terrorists use the internet to provoke individuals to carry out attacks in the UK and across the world. It only takes one post, video, or article to influence somebody and potentially drag them deeper into extremist content.
You can help us stop terrorist and extremist online presence by reporting content such as:
- Speeches or essays calling for racial or religious violence,
- Videos of violence with messages in praise of terrorists,
- Postings inciting people to commit acts of terrorism or violent extremism,
- Messages intended to stir up hatred against any religious or ethnic group,
- Bomb-making instructions,
- Advice on how to obtain or make weapons.
Specialist teams will then investigate the content and will work with internet companies to have it removed (should it be deemed appropriate to do so).
